Have local stages outlived their usefulness for the New Zealand Pliocene- Pleistocene?

چکیده
Stratigraphic subdivision of the New Zealand Pliocene-Pleistocene has its historical basis in biostratigraphy, especially in the shallow marine strata in the Wanganui and East Coast basins, North Island. Internationally, an astronomically calibrated, high resolution timescale is now well established for the PliocenePleistocene, based on predominantly precession-controlled sedimentary cycles in the Mediterranean region, and the mainly obliquity-controlled, high resolution, deep-sea, benthonic oxygen isotope record. Naish and others have recently provided a similar Milankovitch-frequency cyclostratigraphy for the Pliocene-Pleistocene of New Zealand (last 3.6 m.y.), based on the Wanganui Basin record. This cyclostratigraphic record allows numeric ages to be estimated for at least 114 stratigraphic horizons in Wanganui Basin, which are not otherwise dated. Based on this record, we propose new definitions for the boundaries between New Zealand Pliocene-Pleistocene stages. The new boundaries respect traditional biostratigraphic indicators, but are based upon objective markers, mainly magnetic polarity reversals. The two exceptions are the base-Marahauan (equated with the international Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary, at 1.81 Ma) and the base-Haweran (equated with the base of the Rangitawa Tephra, at 0.34 Ma). The revised positions and ages for the age/stage and subage/substage boundaries, from older to younger, are: base-Opoitian Stage, base-Thvera subchron, 5.25 Ma; base-Waitotaran Stage (= baseWaipipian Substage), Gauss/Gilbert boundary, 3.60 Ma; base-Mangapanian Substage, top-Kaena Subchron, 3.03 Ma; base-Nukumaruan Stage (= base-Hautawan Substage), Matuyama/Gauss boundary, 2.58 Ma; base-Marahauan Substage, Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary, 1.81 Ma; baseCastlecliffian Stage (= base-Okehuan Substage), baseJaramillo Subchron, 1.07 Ma; base-Putikian Substage, Brunhes/Matuyama boundary, 0.78 Ma; base-Haweran Stage, base-Rangitawa Tephra, 0.34 Ma.

Bridging the "beech-gap": New Zealand invertebrate phylogeography implicates Pleistocene glaciation and Pliocene isolation.
The existence of areas of lower endemism and disjunction of New Zealand biota is typified by Nothofagus beech trees (hence "beech-gap") and have been attributed to a variety of causes ranging from ancient fault-mediated displacement (20-25 million years ago) to Pleistocene glacial extirpation (< 1.8 million years ago). We used cytochrome oxidase I and 12S mtDNA sequence data from a suite of end...
متن کاملA Pliocene-Pleistocene stack of 57 globally distributed benthic DO records
[1] We present a 5.3-Myr stack (the ‘‘LR04’’ stack) of benthic dO records from 57 globally distributed sites aligned by an automated graphic correlation algorithm. This is the first benthic dO stack composed of more than three records to extend beyond 850 ka, and we use its improved signal quality to identify 24 new marine isotope stages in the early Pliocene. We also present a new LR04 age mod...

The late Pliocene – early Pleistocene sediment record in the AND-1B core from the McMurdo Sound, Ross Sea, Antarctica, displays a rich diversity and high abundance of diatoms, including several new morphologies within the genus Fragilariopsis. These new morphologies exhibit similarities to the extinct late Miocene/early Pliocene species Fragilariopsis aurica Gersonde and Fragilariopsis praecurt...
متن کاملModern and ancient Zygochlamys delicatula shellbeds in New Zealand, and their sequence stratigraphic implications
The scallop Zygochlamys delicatula is an indicator species for a carbonate shellground facies which occurs on the sediment-starved outer shelf and upper slope around southern New Zealand. The modern distribution of Z. delicatula is restricted to areas where sea summer surface temperatures are less than ca. 15oC. Its occurrence in Late Pliocene and Pleistocene strata in North Island has, therefo...
متن کاملThe Invertebrate Life of New Zealand: A Phylogeographic Approach
Phylogeography contributes to our knowledge of regional biotas by integrating spatial and genetic information. In New Zealand, comprising two main islands and hundreds of smaller ones, phylogeography has transformed the way we view our biology and allowed comparison with other parts of the world. Here we review studies on New Zealand terrestrial and freshwater invertebrates. We find little evid...
